As Lagos expands its use of digital traffic enforcement, here are key details every motorist should understand about the newly activated speed cameras:
1. Location: Speed and traffic violation cameras are now operational at major points across Lagos, including the Third Mainland Bridge (80 km/h speed limit), Alapere, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Allen Avenue, and Nurudeen Olowopopo Drive. These sites monitor not only speeding but also infractions such as running red lights, illegal U-turns, and lane violations.
2. Technology: The system uses radar, LiDAR, or in-road sensors to detect a vehicle’s speed. When a limit is exceeded, high-resolution cameras capture the license plate. Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) software then matches the plate to registered vehicle data, recording the speed, time, location, and vehicle details as evidence.
3. Enforcement: Oversight is managed by the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), under the Ministry of Transportation. A central processing center reviews all violations before fines are issued. On federal roads like the Third Mainland Bridge, CCTV footage is monitored in real time from a dedicated control center.
4. Fines: Motorists will receive violation notices via SMS sent to the vehicle’s registered owner. The fines currently stated are ₦50,000 for speeding and ₦20,000 for offenses such as running a red light or illegal U-turns. No physical stops are required, the system automates the notification process.
5. Data Storage: While Lagos authorities have not specified exact retention periods, such systems typically store violation data, including images and metadata, for several months to a year. This allows time for dispute resolution and compliance with enforcement protocols.
The aim of the cameras is road safety, not revenue. Motorists are encouraged to obey posted speed limits and traffic signs to avoid penalties and contribute to safer roads in Lagos.
