Nigeria, Ghana Sign MoU on Seafarers’ Certification, Maritime Security

Nigeria and Ghana have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the mutual recognition of Certificates of Competency (CoC) for seafarers, marking a significant step towards strengthening maritime cooperation and enhancing regional integration in West Africa.

The agreement was signed by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, and Ghana’s Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, during a bilateral meeting aimed at deepening collaboration in the maritime sector.

Speaking after the signing, Adegboyega Oyetola said the MoU would enable certified seafarers from both countries to have their Certificates of Competency recognised, thereby improving employment opportunities and facilitating the movement of skilled maritime professionals within the sub-region.

Oyetola noted that the agreement also covers cooperation in maritime security, safety, training, capacity building, technical exchange, and the implementation of international maritime conventions. He described the partnership as a milestone in promoting safer and more efficient shipping operations in the Gulf of Guinea.
