To address transportation challenges in Etung Local Government Area, the Cross River State House of Assembly has called on the state government to supply outboard engines to riverine communities reliant on water transport. The initiative aims to improve mobility, access to healthcare, and economic opportunities.
The Assembly directed the Ministry of Transportation and Marine Services, in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government Affairs, to procure and distribute the engines. Hon. Kingsley Ntui, representing Etung State Constituency, sponsored the motion, highlighting the struggles of communities like Abijang, Nsofang, Mkpot, and Itaka, which depend on waterways. “The lack of motorized transport causes economic stagnation and limits access to emergency services,” Ntui stated.
Rt. Hon. Davies Etta (Abi) and Speaker Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, along with other lawmakers, unanimously supported the proposal, urging swift action. The Assembly also appealed to the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and development partners for support.
The state government is reportedly exploring budgetary provisions for the engines, with discussions ongoing to assess community needs. SEMA is considering integrating the project into disaster preparedness programs, while NGOs are being approached for funding or technical assistance.
Local leaders in Etung South have called for transparent distribution, and youth groups proposed training local mechanics for engine maintenance.
The initiative is expected to boost economic activity, particularly cocoa transport, and improve healthcare access, potentially reducing mortality rates. A joint committee from the ministries must report progress within 60 days. The Assembly may extend similar efforts to other riverine LGAs like Bakassi and Akpabuyo if successful. Residents await action, hopeful for meaningful change.
