Dangote Cement Plc retrains more than 900 truck drivers as part of its renewed push to strengthen road safety and improve operational efficiency across the country. The refresher programme was conducted during the company’s 2025 Annual Drivers’ Retreat held at its Ibese Plant in Ogun State, with another session scheduled to hold at Obajana, Kogi State, next week.

Speaking at the retreat, Group Managing Director of Dangote Cement, Arvind Pathak, said the exercise underscored the company’s commitment to its “Absolute Safer Road Policy,” stressing that safety remains at the heart of Dangote’s operations.

“Our drivers are the backbone of our logistics chain, and their safety, alongside that of other road users, is paramount. This retraining is not just a routine—it is an investment in lives and in sustaining operational excellence,” Pathak said.

Dangote Cement explained that its safety strategy begins at the recruitment stage, where only candidates with a valid Class G driver’s license, verified guarantors, and successful medical tests including eyesight and blood pressure checks are considered. Applicants also undergo random drug and alcohol screenings before embarking on a two-week intensive training programme, which covers 12 safety modules, driving assessments, and written examinations. According to the company, more than 2,000 applicants have been processed in the last two months, but only those who meet the stringent criteria are cleared to drive Dangote trucks.

Beyond recruitment, the cement giant enforces daily pre-trip medical checks for its drivers, alongside unannounced drug and alcohol testing to maintain a zero-tolerance policy. The company also collaborates with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other regulators to strengthen national road safety standards.

Group Chief of Health, Safety, Social and Environment at Dangote Industries Limited, Dr. James Adenuga, urged drivers to take the safety lessons to heart. “Training only makes an impact when it connects with people. We use every opportunity meetings, retreats, even informal sessions to reinforce safe driving values. And importantly, we recognize and reward drivers who consistently demonstrate discipline and responsibility,” Adenuga said.
