The Enugu State Government has approved N10 billion for Phase One of a proposed 135.4-kilometre rail project, marking a significant step toward reviving rail transportation and boosting economic activity in the state.

The approval was announced following the State Executive Council meeting, with officials describing the project as a strategic investment aimed at improving mobility, easing road congestion and enhancing the movement of goods and people across Enugu and adjoining areas.

According to the government, the rail initiative is designed to support trade, reduce transportation costs and attract private investment, while complementing existing road infrastructure. Phase One will focus on priority segments of the corridor, laying the foundation for subsequent stages of the project.

State authorities noted that the rail development aligns with Enugu’s broader infrastructure and economic growth agenda, expressing optimism that the project will create jobs and position the state as a regional transport hub once fully completed.
