A transport and road safety expert, Mr. Balogun, has emphasized that Nigeria can only achieve safer and more efficient road transportation through effective regulation, credible enforcement, and professional driver training.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ forum on transport development, Balogun noted that poor driver education and weak enforcement remain major causes of road accidents in the country. He stressed that improving driver competence must be treated as a national priority alongside road infrastructure development.
He said effective regulation would ensure that only qualified and properly trained drivers operate vehicles on Nigerian roads, while credible enforcement would help sustain discipline and compliance with traffic laws.
Balogun also highlighted the need for accredited driver-training institutions and continuous re-training of commercial drivers to align with global safety standards. According to him, a well-structured driver-training system would not only reduce crashes but also improve overall transport efficiency by cutting delays and operational costs.
He urged government agencies, private transport operators, and driving schools to collaborate in implementing stricter safety and training policies, adding that a holistic approach, combining education, enforcement, and technology was essential to reducing road fatalities.
