The Federal Government has unveiled plans to expand and modernise radar coverage across Nigeria’s civil airports and Nigerian Air Force (NAF) bases as part of broader efforts to enhance aviation safety, airspace surveillance and operational efficiency.

Under the initiative, officials said the government will deploy advanced primary and secondary radar systems at key locations to ensure seamless monitoring of aircraft movements within Nigeria’s Flight Information Region (FIR). The upgrades are expected to improve aircraft tracking, reduce blind spots in airspace surveillance and strengthen coordination between civil aviation authorities and military air-defence units.

The programme includes enhanced radar infrastructure at major international airports as well as at strategic Air Force installations, creating overlapping coverage that will support both civilian air-traffic control and national security operations. Authorities say this dual-use approach will better detect unidentified aircraft and improve responsiveness to potential airspace threats.
