The Lagos State House of Assembly held a public hearing on a bill to establish the Lagos State Railway Corporation, aimed at strengthening the city’s transport infrastructure and improving the efficiency of rail services.

Hon. Mojisola Meranda (Apapa I), speaking for the Speaker, said the legislation underscores the Assembly’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for Lagos residents by improving mass transit through reliable and affordable rail services.

The proposed law would allow the Corporation to partner with both public and private entities for railway projects, support system expansion such as the Purple, Green, and Orange Lines, and establish regulatory mechanisms including the office of an Inspector of Railways to oversee safety and operations.

Hon. Temitope Adewale, Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation, said the move is expected to help decongest Lagos roads and improve intermodal connectivity, while the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) will remain the regulatory body overseeing transport in the state.
