In a move to enhance road safety and security, the Lagos State Government has approved a three-month rebate window for motorists to replace faded or unreadable vehicle number plates at a reduced cost.
The initiative, endorsed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was announced by the Permanent Secretary of the Motor Vehicles Administration Agency (MVAA), Mr. Rasheed Muri-Okunola. He described the rebate as a “proactive and citizen-friendly intervention” aimed at encouraging voluntary compliance while easing the financial burden on vehicle owners.
“Clear and properly maintained number plates are essential for vehicle identification and security,” Muri-Okunola stated. “This three-month rebate is designed to give motorists ample opportunity to replace faded plates at a reduced cost while supporting our collective responsibility to keep Lagos roads safe and well-regulated.”
The rebate applies specifically to vehicle owners whose plates have become worn, faded, or illegible due to weather exposure and prolonged use. Muri-Okunola emphasized that legible plates are critical for effective traffic management, crime detection, and the functionality of digital vehicle tracking systems used by the state.
Motorists can take advantage of the offer by visiting the MVAA One Stop Centre in Oshodi or any MVAA station across Lagos. The Permanent Secretary warned against unauthorized agents and reiterated that all replacements must be processed through designated government-approved centers.
The initiative reflects the state’s commitment to balancing enforcement with empathy, promoting compliance through incentives rather than penalties. According to Muri-Okunola, the program also supports broader goals of improving emergency response efficiency and strengthening security across Lagos.
The three-month rebate period is now in effect, with officials assuring seamless service delivery for participating motorists.
