The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce a regulated parking system by 2026 as part of efforts to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion across the metropolis.
According to government sources, the initiative will be implemented through the Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) and is designed to address the growing challenge of indiscriminate parking, which contributes significantly to traffic gridlock in the state.
Under the proposed system, motorists will be required to park only in designated areas, with parking zones properly marked and managed through digital monitoring and payment platforms. The regulation will also introduce penalties for illegal parking and obstruction of traffic routes.
Officials noted that the initiative aligns with the state’s broader transportation reform agenda, which includes the expansion of road infrastructure, enhancement of public transport options, and deployment of smart traffic management technologies.
The government added that the regulated parking scheme will be rolled out in phases, beginning with high-traffic corridors in Ikeja, Victoria Island, Lekki, and Surulere, before expanding to other parts of Lagos.
Residents and transport operators have expressed optimism that the initiative, once fully implemented, will help decongest major roads, improve travel time, and promote orderliness within the state’s transport ecosystem.
