The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has established a Flight Data Centre as part of efforts to strengthen aviation safety and regulatory oversight in the country.
Speaking at the commissioning of the centre in Abuja, the Director-General of Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo, described the project as a milestone in the industry’s shift from reactive safety oversight to a more proactive and performance-based system. He said the facility would enable real-time gathering and analysis of flight data to detect and address safety risks before they escalate into incidents or accidents.
Najomo noted that the initiative, which had been stalled since 2016, was revived under his leadership and completed with support from the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo. He commended the team led by NCAA’s Director of Special Duties, Horatius Egua, for driving the project to completion.
The Flight Data Centre, according to the NCAA, will enhance safety oversight, improve incident investigations, track operational trends, and promote collaboration among stakeholders. It is also expected to reduce costs for operators, boost efficiency, and strengthen Nigeria’s reputation in global aviation.
The launch, which coincided with a training workshop for NCAA managers, was attended by representatives from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), the Banjul Accord Group Safety Oversight Organisation (BAGASOO), and other aviation stakeholders.
