Governor of Delta State

The Nigerian Ports Authority(NPA) will revive ports in Delta State to alleviate severe congestion at the key maritime hubs in Lagos, Managing Director Mohammed Bello-Koko announced Wednesday.

The initiative, announced by NPA Managing Director Mohammed Bello-Koko during a meeting with Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and key stakeholders in Warri, targets the ports of Warri, Koko, Burutu, and Sapele. The project aims to enhance trade, attract new investments, and stimulate economic growth across the South-South region.

Bello-Koko cited the severe congestion at the Apapa and Tin Can Island ports in Lagos as a primary driver for the policy shift. He emphasized the urgent need for the government and maritime industry stakeholders to develop alternative gateways to facilitate more efficient cargo evacuation and reduce the immense pressure on road infrastructure leading into Lagos.

“This plan is aligned with the federal government’s broader agenda to expand the nation’s maritime economy beyond its current focus,” Bello-Koko stated. He confirmed that the NPA is already in discussions with terminal operators and shipping companies to create incentives for utilizing the Delta ports.

In response, Governor Oborevwori pledged his administration’s full collaboration, calling the initiative a pivotal step toward unlocking the state’s vast maritime potential. He committed to working with the NPA and private investors to address critical challenges, particularly regarding security and infrastructure, which have historically hindered the ports’ full operational capacity.
