United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) have convened a strategic meeting aimed at strengthening collaboration and advancing key areas of aviation development in the country.
According to a statement released on Tuesday by the airline, discussions centered on critical issues including environmental safety, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) support, airport operating hours, infrastructure upgrades, and UNA’s expansion plans.
Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Obiora Okonkwo, raised concerns over the increasing frequency of bird strikes, describing them as a serious threat to operational and financial stability. He also highlighted challenges posed by restricted operating hours at sunrise and sunset airports, as well as limitations at Category II facilities, which he noted often result in schedule disruptions and delays.
Okonkwo further requested land allocation in Abuja for the establishment of an MRO facility aimed at bolstering local technical capacity. In addition, he called attention to the growing trend of unruly passenger behaviour at airports, urging stronger regulatory measures.
In response, FAAN Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to collaborative problem-solving, noting that sustained partnerships are vital to improving safety standards and operational efficiency.
Kuku disclosed that FAAN has identified primary causes of bird strikes and is currently implementing improved grass and habitat management strategies around airport perimeters. She also announced plans to upgrade airfield lighting at Category II airports to facilitate extended operational hours. According to her, apron rehabilitation works are ongoing at Benin Airport, while lighting enhancements are scheduled for Jos Airport.
On the issue of unruly passengers, Kuku pledged stricter enforcement of existing regulations. She also expressed readiness to fast-track the review of UNA’s land request for the proposed Abuja MRO, emphasizing that the project would significantly strengthen Nigeria’s domestic aircraft maintenance capabilities.
