The Lekki Deep Seaport has reached 50 percent operational capacity, with barges now handling an average of 10 cargo units daily, marking steady progress in the port’s ramp-up phase.
Port officials say the development reflects improved berth utilization and enhanced logistics coordination following investments in dredging, terminal infrastructure and hinterland connectivity. The daily handling of 10 barges; each carrying different cargo types, underscores Lekki Port’s growing role in easing pressure on Nigeria’s congested coastal ports.
According to executives, the increased barge activity is part of efforts to diversify cargo movement methods, ease road traffic, and reduce turnaround times for freight operators. Stakeholders believe that continued expansion will attract more shipping lines and position Lekki Port as a key gateway for regional trade.
The port’s management noted that ongoing work to deepen access channels and integrate cargo handling systems is expected to support further capacity increases and enhance operational efficiencies in the months ahead.
