A 55-year-old motorist escaped unhurt on Friday after a moving train heading towards Agege collided with his Honda car (EKY 902 JT) at the PWD Railway Line.
LASTMA operatives and security personnel responded swiftly. The impact caused extensive damage to the Honda, leaving it a virtual write-off. No injuries or casualties were reported.
Working together, the LASTMA team and security personnel rescued the driver unhurt and removed the mangled vehicle from the railway track. Their quick, coordinated action cleared the obstruction and allowed the train to continue its journey to Agege.
Traffic around the PWD axis remains severely congested, with movement still impeded along the corridor.
The wrecked Honda was handed over to security personnel for investigation into the cause of the collision.
LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki commended the prompt and coordinated response of the agency’s operatives and the security personnel involved. He praised their vigilance and professionalism in managing an incident that could have had far worse consequences.
Bakare-Oki said effective inter-agency collaboration, situational awareness and fast emergency intervention are essential to reducing the impact of unexpected transport incidents, especially those involving railway operations and nearby roads.
He urged motorists to obey railway safety rules and to approach railway crossings and train corridors with extra caution. He warned against attempting to cross tracks when a train is approaching or already in motion, noting that reckless disregard for safety protocols can have devastating and irreversible consequences.
LASTMA appealed to motorists and other road users to remain vigilant, use good judgement and comply fully with traffic and railway safety regulations. The agency said protecting human life must remain the priority in all road-use decisions, and that many collisions can be prevented through responsible conduct, caution and strict observance of safety instructions.
