Ciota President Demands Professionalisation Of Nigeria’s Transport Sector At Anambra Retreat

Prince Segun OchukoObayendo, FinsTA, president, Chartered Institute of Transport Administration (CIoTA), delivered a resolute call for the professionalisation of Nigeria’s transportation sector during his keynote address at the inaugural Transport Policy and Planning Retreat in Anambra State. The event, themed “Transport Policy and Planning for Sustainable Development,” brought together policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholders to address systemic challenges and chart a path toward a modernised, sustainable transport ecosystem.

Prince Obayendoemphasised the indispensable role of transportation in driving economic growth and social cohesion but lamented its underfunded and undervalued status compared to sectors like healthcare and law. “If transportation is truly vital to national progress, why does it lack the recognition and investment afforded to medicine, banking, or legal professions?” he challenged. He stressed that the sector’s transformation hinges on rigorous professional standards, citing CIoTA’s mandate under the 2019 Parliamentary Act to regulate, certify, and train transport practitioners. “Our mission is clear: eradicate quackery, certify competence, and align Nigeria’s transport sector with global best practices,” he declared.

The CIoTA President outlined actionable strategies, including mandatory certification for all transport professionals, statewide capacity-building programs, and partnerships with government agencies to enforce operational standards. He commended Anambra State’s leadership in hosting the retreat and urged stakeholders to leverage the event’s outcomes to position the state as a model for transport innovation. “Anambra has the vision and political will to become Nigeria’s transport hub. Let us translate policies into roads, railways, and systems that serve generations,” he asserted.

The retreat featured in-depth discussions on sustainable infrastructure, safety regulations, and funding models. Key attendees included Mrs. Patricia Igwebuike, Anambra State Commissioner for Transport; Mr. Martin Nwafor, Operations Lead at Chinua Achebe International Cargo Airport; Engr. Emeka Okonkwo, Managing Director of the Anambra Road Traffic Management Agency (ARTMA); and Mr. ChikeObiakor, Managing Director of the Anambra State Transport Agency.
