Passengers aboard the Abuja-Kaduna train experienced moments of panic on Tuesday when the service derailed near Jere, causing multiple coaches to veer off the tracks. The incident prompted an immediate scramble for safety, with many travelers initially fearing a security attack.

Eyewitness accounts described scenes of confusion and distress. “There was shouting everywhere, people rushed to escape. Many thought it was another train attack,” one passenger recounted.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed that six passengers sustained minor injuries and have received medical attention. Security agencies, including military personnel, were deployed to assist in evacuation and ensure order at the scene.

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has directed that all affected individuals receive immediate medical and psychosocial support. Through his spokesperson, Ahmed Maiyaki, the governor urged calm and assured the public that the situation is under control.

The Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has initiated a formal investigation into the cause of the derailment. A team of investigators has been dispatched to the site to gather evidence and consult relevant stakeholders. The agency confirmed that safety recommendations will be issued upon completion of the inquiry.

Governor Sani expressed sympathy for the victims and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and travelers along the Abuja-Kaduna corridor.
