The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Dr. Ekperikpe Ekpo, has announced plans to utilize Nigeria’s extensive natural gas reserves to fuel the country’s forthcoming high-speed rail network. The initiative forms a key part of the national strategy to boost infrastructure development and industrial growth.

Speaking at the International Railway Conference 2025 in Abuja, Dr. Ekpo emphasized the shift under President Tinubu’s “Decade of Gas Initiative,” which repositioned gas as central to Nigeria’s energy and economic planning. With proven reserves of 210 trillion cubic feet and potential resources reaching 600 trillion cubic feet, natural gas is set to provide a clean, affordable, and reliable energy source for the rail system.

The proposed 4,000 km rail network, designed for speeds of up to 350 km/h, will enhance regional connectivity and support gas-based industrial development along its corridor. The initiative also aligns with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), strengthening Nigeria’s role as an economic hub in West and Central Africa.

This integrated energy-transport approach supports the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aiming to drive industrialization, create jobs, and promote sustainable development.
