The Abia State Government has reiterated that full compensation has been paid to landowners affected by the construction of the Nsulu International Airport in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area.
Governor Alex Otti gave the assurance during a civic reception for stakeholders from the host communities, stressing that his administration would not shortchange anyone in the process. He explained that payments were made before construction began in December 2024, and any outstanding cases were linked to administrative issues such as account errors or ownership disputes.
According to the governor, the airport project is designed to be more than just an aviation hub, with plans for an “airport city” that will include hotels, shopping plazas, markets, and a Nigerian Air Force base. He also noted that access roads to the site are under construction and targeted for completion by December.
The Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Chaka Chukwumereije, emphasized that the compensation process had been transparent and in line with due process, dismissing allegations that villagers were coerced or denied rightful payment. He disclosed that about 3,500 persons had already received compensation, while unresolved claims would be addressed individually.
Governor Otti urged the host communities to continue supporting the project, which he said would boost economic growth, create jobs, and position Abia as an aviation and business hub in the South-East.
