The National President of the Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria (CIoTA), Prince Segun Ochuko Obayendo FinsTA, has urged the adoption of an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) and enhanced data sharing among states to tackle persistent inefficiencies and safety issues in Nigeria’s transport network.
He spoke today at the North Central Zonal Transport Conference in Jos, themed “Transforming Transport Infrastructure for Sustainable Economic Development of Nigeria.” The event was attended by the Representative of the Plateau State Governor and Commissioner of Transport, Hon. Davou Gyang Jatau.
Obayendo emphasized that the sector remains hampered by outdated practices and a critical lack of reliable data. “We must embrace technology such as Intelligent Transport Systems and ensure seamless data accessibility across states to bring our transport infrastructure into the 21st century,” he stated.
He linked recent transport accidents, including boat mishaps on inland waterways and the recent Abuja-Kaduna train derailment to unprofessionalism and poor data coordination. “Without professionalism and data-driven systems, our infrastructure will continue to be compromised,” he warned.
The CIoTA National President also called for stronger collaboration between government and private stakeholders to ensure safety, affordability, and sustainability. He expressed hope that the conference would produce a actionable framework for meaningful change.
“We cannot leave everything to the government. It is time for all hands to be on deck,” Obayendo concluded.
