The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has commenced the deployment of four new high-capacity hybrid buses, marking a significant step in upgrading Abuja’s public transportation network under the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Initiative.

The buses, each with a 50-passenger capacity, operate on a dual-fuel system combining Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and diesel. This technology is central to the initiative’s goals of promoting cleaner, more cost-effective urban mobility and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Mandate Secretary for the FCTA Transport Secretariat, Chinedu Elechi, formally received the vehicles. He emphasized their role in easing commuter burdens and providing more reliable, comfortable transit services across the capital city. “This is a timely addition to Abuja’s evolving transport infrastructure,” Elechi stated.

The deployment aligns with broader FCTA efforts to modernize transport, including the recent commissioning of ultra-modern bus terminals in Mabushi and Kugbo. Additional terminals are planned for Bwari, Gwagwalada, and Kuje, with the hybrid fleet intended to form the backbone of this expanded system.

Michael Oluwagbemi, Chief Executive Officer of the Presidential CNG Initiative, commended the FCTA’s leadership in adopting sustainable infrastructure solutions. He described the buses as foundational for building a scalable, reliable public transport network capable of serving Abuja’s growing population.

Championed by President Bola Tinubu, the Presidential CNG Initiative aims to bolster energy security, create employment opportunities, and lower transportation costs through sustainable alternatives. The program will also introduce new Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) license plate formats specifically for CNG and electric vehicles, starting in September.

This deployment signals the FCTA’s strategic shift towards a more efficient and environmentally conscious public transportation system for Abuja residents.
