Dispatch Rider Killed in Tragic Collision with Train at Lagos Level Crossing

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a renewed safety appeal following a fatal incident on Thursday, where a dispatch rider was struck and killed by a train at the PWD Railway Level Crossing in Ikeja.

According to an official statement, the accident occurred when the motorcyclist, riding a bike registered AGL 179 QR, attempted to cross the railway tracks despite the approach of an oncoming train. Eyewitnesses reported that the rider ignored audible and visual warnings in an attempt to outpace the train, resulting in the immediate loss of his life near the access road to Ikeja GRA.

LASTMA personnel, along with officers from the Shogunle Police Division, promptly secured the scene and managed traffic flow. The body was subsequently evacuated by the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU).

In his response, LASTMA General Manager Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki extended condolences to the family of the deceased and emphasized the dire consequences of impatience and non-compliance with safety regulations.

“This tragic incident underscores the critical need for vigilance and strict adherence to warning signs at railway crossings,” Bakare-Oki stated. He urged all road users, particularly dispatch riders, to exercise caution and obey traffic signals to prevent similar avoidable fatalities.

The General Manager reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to enhancing public safety through intensified education and enforcement operations, especially around high-risk corridors and railway intersections across Lagos.
