Aviation experts have called for sweeping reforms to address Nigeria’s ailing aviation sector, identifying poor infrastructure, policy inconsistency, and high operational costs as major barriers to growth.
Speaking at an industry forum in Lagos, former Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Dr. Richard Aisuebeogun, said the sector needs an overhaul of its funding mechanisms and regulatory framework to attract sustainable investment.
Aisuebeogun proposed the creation of a dedicated Aviation Development Fund and the establishment of a national aircraft leasing company to support local operators and reduce dependence on foreign leasing firms.
Other stakeholders stressed the need for a long-term aviation master plan aligned with global best practices, while urging the Federal Government to streamline multiple regulatory charges that burden indigenous airlines.
They also highlighted the importance of embracing digital transformation across airport operations, maintenance, and air traffic management to enhance efficiency and safety.
