The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed a devastating boat accident on the River Niger in Kogi State’s Ibaji Local Government Area, with 14 bodies recovered, 24 passengers rescued, and 42 individuals still missing.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at approximately 5:40 p.m. A boat carrying about 80 passengers capsized while en route from the Onugwa community to Olushi village.

Upon receiving the alert, the Director-General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, activated the Agency’s Abuja Operations Office, directing immediate deployment of personnel to support local rescue efforts. “The deployment underscores NEMA’s resolve to provide timely intervention and strengthen coordination with state and community responders,” Umar stated.

A multi-agency search and rescue operation is currently underway, involving the Kogi State Emergency Management Agency, the National Inland Waterways Authority, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, and local community divers.

The NEMA response team, led by Mr. Zakari Abubakar, Head of the Abuja Operations Office, has visited the scene and commiserated with the traditional ruler of Onugwa, Chief Patrick Arome, and his community.

This tragedy underscores the persistent challenge of boat accidents in Nigeria’s riverine communities, often attributed to overcrowding, poorly maintained vessels, and a lack of adherence to safety regulations. It highlights the urgent need for strict enforcement of water safety measures, including the use of life jackets and passenger limits.
