United Nigeria Airlines has announced a significant fleet expansion with the signing of an aircraft purchase agreement with Southwest Airlines for six Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The move is part of the airline’s strategic plan to enhance its domestic, regional, and international operations while offering competitive fares.

The Boeing 737-800s, known for their advanced technology, fuel efficiency, and passenger comfort, will enable the airline to serve short and medium-haul routes more effectively. The aircraft can accommodate up to 189 passengers and boasts improved aerodynamics and reduced environmental impact.

Executive Chairman Prof. Obiora Okonkwo emphasized that the acquisition supports the airline’s growth trajectory after four years of reliable service. He highlighted benefits such as expanded route networks, reduced travel times, and increased job opportunities, aligning with national economic development goals.

Boeing’s Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa, Anbessie Yitbarek, welcomed United Nigeria Airlines to the 737 family, noting the aircraft’s reliability and operational efficiency.

The transaction was facilitated by SkyWorks Holdings, LLC, which expressed confidence in the aircraft’s role in supporting the growing African aviation market. United Nigeria Airlines also plans to acquire four additional aircraft, bringing its future fleet total to ten by early 2027.
