In a bid to bolster road safety and security, the Lagos State Government has announced a three-month discount window for motorists to replace faded or illegible vehicle number plates.
The initiative, approved by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was disclosed by the Permanent Secretary of the Motor Vehicles Administration Agency (MVAA), Mr. Rasheed Muri-Okunola. In an official statement released on Wednesday, Muri-Okunola described the measure as a proactive and citizen-friendly intervention designed to encourage voluntary compliance while alleviating the financial burden of plate replacement.
“Clear and legible number plates are critical to effective traffic management, public safety, and crime prevention,” the statement noted. It highlighted that obscured plates hinder law enforcement efforts in vehicle identification, crime detection, and the functionality of digital tracking systems.
The rebate applies specifically to faded, worn, or unreadable plates and excludes new vehicle registrations. While the exact discount rate was not specified, the offer provides a cost-saving opportunity amid recently increased national rates for number plates.
Motorists are advised to process their replacements at the MVAA One-Stop Centre in Oshodi or any official MVAA office across the state. The government strongly cautioned against using unauthorized agents, emphasizing that all transactions must be conducted through official channels.
This policy follows the revised fee structure implemented nationwide by the Joint Tax Board (JTB) in June 2025, which saw significant price increases for new plates due to enhanced security features and production costs.
The three-month window reflects the state government’s approach of combining regulatory enforcement with pragmatic support for vehicle owners, signaling a renewed focus on maintaining stringent vehicle identification standards in Lagos.
