EMPAN Launches Training Program for Mechanics to Accelerate Electric Vehicle Adoption in Nigeria

The Electric Mobility Promoters Association of Nigeria (EMPAN) has initiated a specialized training program for roadside mechanics, equipping them with essential skills to maintain and repair electric vehicles (EVs). The move aims to address a critical barrier to EV adoption in Nigeria—the shortage of technically proficient maintenance personnel, while also helping reduce overall transport costs.

The inaugural training session, held at the University of Lagos Design Studio in Akoka, provided 25 mechanics with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in servicing electric motorcycles and tricycles. The program was implemented in collaboration with Siemens and facilitated by AfricaNev.

Engr. Dapo Adeshina, President of EMPAN, emphasized that skilled local technicians are vital to building confidence in electric mobility. “With proper training, transport operators can reduce operating costs by up to 40%,” he stated. Adeshina also called on the government to support the sector through improved charging infrastructure, low-interest financing, import duty waivers for EVs, and solar-powered charging stations.

Sebastian Gruss, a representative from Siemens, highlighted the program’s potential to not only close the technical skills gap but also create new job opportunities and connect trained mechanics with key industry players.

This capacity-building effort marks a significant step toward sustainable transportation in Nigeria, aligning with broader goals to promote clean energy and reduce carbon emissions.
