In a landmark move to strengthen road safety and consumer protection, a tripartite alliance between the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) will now enforce compulsory motor insurance and ensure faster medical care for accident victims. This collaboration, finalized during a meeting at the NAICOM headquarters in Abuja, marks a critical step in implementing the new Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025.
The agencies have agreed to integrate their data systems, with NAICOM and the FRSC establishing a platform for real-time verification of vehicle insurance to eradicate fake policies and accelerate responses to road incidents. A joint public awareness campaign will also be launched to educate motorists on the benefits of genuine insurance and its direct connection to road safety.
To ensure strict compliance, a joint enforcement committee will be formed to address fraud, while the FRSC will incorporate valid insurance checks into its standard operations. The partnership also has a vital health component, as the NHIA’s involvement is designed to create a robust system for providing prompt and quality medical treatment to those injured in road crashes, aiming to reduce associated morbidity and mortality.
FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Muhammed emphasized the critical need for “enhanced data exchange to develop a robust system for quick response to road accidents and compensation,” underscoring the role of digitization in eliminating fake insurance certificates.
The Commissioner for Insurance, Mr. Olusegun Omosehin, reaffirmed NAICOM’s commitment, stating that the NIIRA 2025 has not only strengthened third-party motor insurance but also established a victim compensation fund, which will be managed by a committee including FRSC representation.
Echoing the sentiment, the NHIA’s representative, Mr. Ajodi Nasir, highlighted that the synergy ensures the partnership will safeguard road users and guarantee timely medical care for accident victims. This reform underscores the federal government’s broader agenda to modernize Nigeria’s insurance landscape and improve safety standards for all road users. A date for the formal inauguration of the joint committee will be announced shortly.
