A landmark bill to amend the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Act has passed its final legislative stage, receiving approval from the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday, October 21, 2025. The legislation, which earlier secured the support of the House of Representatives, now awaits presidential assent to become law.

Key among the proposed changes is the official renaming of the agency to the Nigeria Road Safety Commission (NRSC), a move intended to better reflect its expanded national mandate. The bill also grants the commission jurisdiction over all public roads, including urban and rural routes, beyond the federal highways it currently oversees.

To strengthen enforcement capabilities, the amendment proposes the establishment of a specialized armed squad within the commission for high-risk operations. Additionally, the NRSC would receive increased authority to regulate traffic, prevent accidents, clear obstructions, and formally conduct public education on road safety.

These reforms are designed to modernize the agency’s operational framework and improve traffic management nationwide. Once signed into law, the bill is expected to enhance the commission’s ability to reduce road accidents and ensure safer travel across Nigeria.
