The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has authorised the resumption of scheduled commercial flight operations at Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, Ibadan, marking a key milestone in the facility’s upgrade and return to active service.

In a letter addressed to the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the NCAA granted a provisional interim operational permit allowing airlines to begin regular passenger services at the airport.

The approval came after a thorough review of the safety-critical facilities, operational arrangements and mitigation measures put in place following recent upgrades at the aerodrome. Improvements driven by the Oyo State Government including runway extension and widening, enhanced airfield lighting, a new 500,000-litre aviation fuel storage facility, and a modern Protocol Lounge were key factors in meeting regulatory safety standards.

Ibadan airport was previously closed earlier in 2025 to enable maintenance and upgrade works, including infrastructure improvements aimed at bringing the airport up to international standards.

State officials welcomed the NCAA’s approval, saying the reopening is expected to boost air connectivity, economic activities and travel convenience for passengers in Oyo State and the South-West region.
