The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved Nigeria’s first-ever National Land Transport Policy, a landmark initiative presented by the Minister of Transportation, Sen. Said Ahmed Alkali. Unveiled last week, the policy is designed to transform Nigeria’s transportation sector by establishing a fast, safe, efficient, affordable, and integrated land transport system.
This comprehensive policy, the first of its kind since Nigeria’s independence, provides a robust legal framework to develop, coordinate, and administer the land transport sector. It aims to foster private sector investment, attract funding, and align with global conventions, regional agreements, and protocols to drive economic growth.
The National Land Transport Policy aims to revolutionize Nigeria’s transportation sector by focusing on three core objectives: enhancing efficiency to maximize socio-economic benefits through a streamlined transport system, prioritizing safety and security to ensure a reliable and secure travel experience across the sector, and fostering an enabling environment to attract private sector investment and drive development.
Spanning 19 chapters, the policy outlines implementation strategies in chapters 18 and 19, involving federal ministries, departments, agencies (MDAs), states, and the private sector. “This policy is a transformative framework that will ensure our transport system is effective, efficient, well-coordinated, safe, secure, and affordable,” said Sen. Alkali during a press briefing.
The approval marks a historic step toward modernizing Nigeria’s transportation landscape, promising a more connected and prosperous future.
