Nigeria has retained its seat on Part II of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council after Engr. Mahmoud Ben-Tukur was re-elected during the 42nd ICAO Assembly in Montreal, Canada.
Ben-Tukur polled 163 out of 185 votes, defeating 11 other African contenders to secure Nigeria’s continued representation in global aviation governance. His re-election consolidates the country’s influence in international aviation policy, safety, and regulatory standards.
A statement by Tunde Moshood, Media Adviser to the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, described the victory as a reflection of “strong international confidence in Nigeria’s aviation sector and its diplomatic engagements.”
Minister Keyamo, who led Nigeria’s delegation to Montreal, hailed the outcome as a proud moment for the country and the continent. He stressed that the mandate would enable Nigeria to further contribute to enhancing global aviation safety, security, and environmental sustainability.
With this re-election, Ben-Tukur will serve alongside other African representatives, including Egypt and South Africa, on the ICAO Council, ensuring that the continent’s interests remain well represented in international aviation decision-making.
