The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has launched a centralised Secure Aviation Data Information Service (SADIS) platform aimed at improving aviation safety and efficiency across the country.
The platform, which replaces the old SADIS File Transfer Protocol (FTP) system, is compliant with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) System-Wide Information Management (SWIM) standards. It is designed to deliver real-time, high-resolution weather data to support safer and more efficient flight operations.
Director-General of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, who is also Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), said the innovation reflects Nigeria’s leadership in modernising aviation weather services in Africa. He praised the agency’s ICT team for driving the transition, describing the project as “critical in modernising Nigeria’s aviation weather services.”
According to NiMet, the new SADIS platform will provide essential aviation datasets such as forecasts on icing, turbulence, cumulonimbus clouds, jet streams, volcanic ash, tropical cyclones, as well as routine meteorological reports including METAR, TAF, and SPECI.
The system is operated by the UK Met Office under ICAO’s framework and allows programmatic access to World Area Forecast System (WAFS) data. With the upgrade, Nigerian pilots, forecasters, and aviation operators will now have easier access to secure, timely weather charts and forecasts.
NiMet said the deployment will enhance flight safety, cut costs for operators, and strengthen Nigeria’s compliance with global aviation standards.
