Road Crashes Decline in Zamfara as FRSC Launches National Safety Campaign

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Zamfara State has reported a significant reduction in road traffic accidents for 2025, even as the national body announced sobering casualty figures for the country.

The Zamfara State Sector Commander, Aliyu Ma’aji, announced a 6.27% decrease in road crashes during a press conference in Gusau to flag off the 2025 Ember Months safety campaign. The state recorded 46 accidents in 2025, down from 56 in 2024.

Commander Ma’aji linked the previous year’s high casualties; 51 deaths and 259 injuries, to dangerous practices such as the mixed loading of goods, animals, and passengers in trucks. He emphasized that this year’s campaign theme, “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving, ”targets the primary cause of accidents: human behavior.

The positive news from Zamfara contrasts with the national outlook. In Abuja, the FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, disclosed that 3,433 people lost their lives in 6,858 road crashes across Nigeria between January and September 2025. An additional 22,162 people were injured in these incidents.

Corps Marshal Mohammed stated that the majority of these crashes were preventable, citing driver recklessness, fatigue, overloading, and the perilous practice of transporting fuel in plastic containers as major causes.

“Apparently, driver behaviour is a fundamental element in determining safety on our highways,” he stated.

The FRSC has launched its annual Ember Months campaign, which will run from December 15 to January 15, to combat the typical surge in accidents during the festive season through intensified public enlightenment and sensitization.
