The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has concluded its search-and-rescue operation following last Sunday’s boat accident at Goronyo Dam, near Kojiyo Village in Sokoto State, confirming four fatalities and the successful rescue of 41 individuals.
The multi-day operation, a coordinated effort involving NEMA, the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Goronyo Local Government officials, and local divers, recovered one additional body during its final phase. The deceased was buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
On Thursday, August 21, the joint team visited four affected communities: Takuske, Kwakwazu, Bari, and Gamiha to verify the number of missing persons and offer condolences to affected families.
NEMA Director-General Mrs. Zubaida Umar praised the collaborative response, stating, “The dedication of our rescue teams and community support has been remarkable. While we mourn the lives lost, we are grateful for the survivors brought to safety.”
The operation has now been formally closed, with all passengers accounted for.
