Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for delivering what he described as a historic breakthrough in transportation safety and connectivity for Bonny Island, ending decades of perilous river crossings and costly air trips.

Wike made the remarks during a “thank you” visit to Bonny Local Government Area, where the newly completed 37.8-kilometre Bodo-Bonny Road is now open to vehicular traffic. The road which is the first ever land link connecting Bonny Island, a major oil and gas hub in Rivers State, with the mainland,  has replaced reliance on boats and helicopters that previously defined journeys to the island.

“Before, each time we wanted to come to Bonny,  we would look at ourselves and say, ‘How is the tide?’ Even in a helicopter, I would see the ocean and say, God, let me come back today,” Wike said, reflecting on the challenges faced for years before the road’s completion. He said the development will bring enhanced safety, reduced travel costs, and greater economic opportunities to the region.
