Nigeria’s UMZA Air has officially rolled out commercial flights on the Abuja–Ilorin route, offering what the airline describes as “permanently cheaper” fares to address the high cost of domestic travel.
According to UMZA’s Managing Director, Mr. Anachuna Henry, one-way ticket prices for the route have been set between ₦145,000 and ₦180,000, representing around a 60 percent discount compared to previous market rates. He emphasised that these fares are not a promotional gimmick but part of the airline’s long-term pricing strategy.
The maiden flight departed Abuja on Sunday evening, marking Ilorin as the latest addition to UMZA’s growing network, which already covers cities including Kano, Yola, Sokoto, Kebbi, Maiduguri, and Lagos. Initial response to ticket sales has been strong, with the airline reporting a surge in bookings attributed to its competitive pricing.
Analysts say UMZA’s entry breaks a long-standing monopoly on the Abuja–Ilorin corridor and could compel other carriers to lower fares or improve service, offering passengers more choice and reducing travel costs in the North-Central region.
