A Washington-bound United Airlines flight was forced to return to Lagos in the early hours of Tuesday after a passenger developed a serious medical condition midair.

The flight, UA613, had departed Murtala Muhammed International Airport around 12:10 a.m. with passengers headed to Washington, D.C. However, about 90 minutes into the journey, the cabin crew issued a call for medical personnel onboard to assist after the passenger suddenly took ill.

According to reports, the pilot decided to return the aircraft to Lagos to ensure the passenger received urgent medical attention. The plane touched down safely at 2:26 a.m., where medical teams were already on standby. The passenger was promptly evacuated from the aircraft and handed over to emergency responders for treatment.

The development disrupted travel plans for many passengers as the airline subsequently cancelled the flight. Travelers were asked to disembark and were later moved to nearby hotels while the airline made alternative arrangements.

Although the nature of the medical emergency was not disclosed, the swift action by the crew and airport authorities helped avert a potential tragedy. United Airlines has not yet released an official statement on the incident.
