The Minister of Transportation, Mr. Said Alkali, has mandated the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to implement intensified reforms aimed at improving safety, reliability, and efficiency across the country’s rail network. The directive was issued in response to recent public feedback highlighting operational challenges and the pressing need for systemic improvements within the sector.

In a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Alkali Jibril, the Minister acknowledged the concerns raised by passengers through various channels, including media reports and community forums. He described these inputs as providing “a clear, insightful, and deeply valuable perspective” essential for the growth and modernization of Nigeria’s rail system.

As part of the reform agenda, Alkali outlined key action points, including a comprehensive review of rail operations and safety protocols, the strengthening of monitoring and accountability mechanisms for management and frontline staff, and the enhancement of public feedback channels to ensure greater transparency and regular communication with passengers.

The Minister reiterated the ministry’s commitment to developing a railway system that aligns with global best practices and meets the expectations of the Nigerian public. He also expressed gratitude to the media for responsible reporting that amplified citizen concerns and recognized the role of the press in fostering transparency and accountability.

Alkali further thanked passengers and the general public for their patience and constructive criticism, noting that such engagement strengthens governance and drives meaningful improvement. He also acknowledged the dedication of frontline railway staff and assured them of continued government support in their efforts to maintain operational continuity.

The statement concluded with a reaffirmation of the government’s dedication to transparency, collaboration, and continuous improvement in pursuit of a safer and more efficient national railway system.
