At the 2025 World LNG Summit & Awards held in Istanbul, NLNG’s Managing Director and CEO, Philip Mshelbila, presented a comprehensive strategy aimed at ensuring liquefied natural gas (LNG) remains a viable and sustainable energy source amid evolving global challenges.

Mshelbila argued that sustaining LNG’s role in the world energy mix requires coordinated efforts across the entire value chain from production and supply diversification, to pricing, financing, and deep decarbonisation. He stressed that LNG contracts must evolve beyond simple volume and price terms to incorporate management of sovereign-risk, diversified supply routes, and long-term resilience.

Speaking on “Energy Expansion in a Challenging Global Trade Environment,” he warned that without structural reforms, the global energy transition could grind to a halt, especially for emerging economies that depend on affordable, reliable gas. He cautioned against reverting to dirtier fuels when LNG becomes expensive or difficult to access.

As part of NLNG’s sustainability commitment, the company continues to push for expansion and capacity growth citing the ongoing NLNG Train 7 Project, which is expected to raise the company’s output from 22 million to 30 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).

At the same time, NLNG is pursuing decarbonisation measures, including modernising its LNG-carrier fleet and investing in carbon-reduction technologies, to align operations with global environmental standards.
