Stakeholders at the 2026 Global Transport Policy (GTP) Annual Multimodal Roundtable have endorsed Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) as the most sustainable model for developing an integrated transport system in Nigeria.
Speaking at the event, Chairman of the GTP Advisory Board, Dr. Segun Musa, said Nigeria must adopt a coordinated multimodal transport system driven by stronger collaboration between the government and the private sector to improve infrastructure and economic competitiveness.
Also speaking, Founder and Executive Director of Global Transport Policy (GTP), Dr. Olusesan Musa, stressed the need for sustained investment in transport infrastructure, policy reforms, and institutional collaboration to achieve an efficient and integrated transport network across the country. The resolution was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the roundtable held in Lagos, where policymakers, transport experts, and industry leaders called for increased private sector participation in the development of road, rail, maritime, and aviation infrastructure.
Participants expressed concern over Nigeria’s heavy dependence on road transport, noting that about 90 per cent of freight is moved by road, while rail accounts for only about one per cent. They stressed the need to expand rail transportation for long-distance movement of cargo to reduce logistics costs, traffic congestion, and road deterioration.
