The Gateway International Airport in Ilisan-Iperu, Ogun State, has obtained an Interim Aerodrome Operational Permit from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), authorizing commercial flight operations. This milestone will enhance air connectivity and stimulate economic growth in South-West Nigeria following comprehensive technical inspections and safety audits.

The airport meets critical safety standards with its Aerodrome Reference Code 3C classification and Category 6 Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Services (ARFFS) rating. Airlines are finalizing direct passenger routes to Abuja and Port Harcourt, while a major logistics firm prepares twice-weekly London cargo flights. This follows a joint December 2024 assessment by NCAA, NAMA, and NiMet that validated its infrastructure.

Governor Dapo Abiodun described the certification as a “historic milestone” that positions Ogun State as a trade and agro-processing hub. Notably, this marks Nigeria’s first airport to receive full operational certification upon initial regulatory inspection.

Upon full operation, the facility will decongest Lagos airspace and provide efficient export channels for agro-businesses. With commercial services beginning imminently, the airport is poised to redefine regional air travel and unlock economic opportunities.
