The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State has launched an urgent safety advisory to motorists as Nigeria enters the historically dangerous “ember months” (September–December). The corps urged reduced speeds and heightened caution to prevent seasonal spikes in road accidents, emphasizing that these months typically see a dramatic rise in fatalities.

Commander Nasir Mohammed of the Sagamu-Ore-Benin Expressway Unit starkly warned that “speed, though sweet, kills faster than deadly diseases,” noting that excessive speed remains the primary cause of fatalities during this period. His comments come amid growing concerns over preventable road tragedies during the busy year-end season.

According to FRSC national data, the ember months have consistently accounted for a disproportionate number of annual road accidents. Statistics from the past five years (2020–2024) show approximately 35% of annual road crashes occurred during these four months, with an average of 2,100 deaths recorded each year between September and December. Speeding, night travel, wrongful overtaking, and drunk driving were identified as the leading contributing factors.

Commander Mohammed specifically advised motorists to strictly observe speed limits and all road signs, avoid night journeys and reckless overtaking, and refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol. He further emphasized the importance of ensuring vehicles are in optimal condition before travel, noting that mechanical failures often exacerbate dangerous situations.

The FRSC has pledged to intensify patrols and public enlightenment campaigns throughout the season to curb preventable tragedies. The corps reminded the public that adherence to traffic regulations remains the most effective measure for ensuring safety during these high-risk months, with enhanced enforcement operations expected across major corridors.
