United Nigeria Airlines Expands Fleet with Acquisition of Six Boeing 737-800 Aircraft

United Nigeria Airlines has finalized an agreement with U.S.-based Southwest Airlines for the purchase of six Boeing 737-800 aircraft, marking a significant milestone in the carrier’s ongoing fleet expansion strategy. The deal was formalized during a signing ceremony held at Southwest Airlines’ headquarters in Dallas, Texas.

The acquisition is poised to enhance the airline’s operational capacity across domestic, regional, and international routes. Known for their fuel efficiency, extended range, and passenger comfort, the Boeing 737-800 aircraft will support reduced operating costs and improved service delivery.

Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, Executive Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, emphasized that this move aligns with the airline’s growth trajectory after four years of consistent service. The agreement also includes long-term technical support, maintenance cooperation, and crew training from Southwest Airlines to ensure operational safety and excellence.

Okonkwo further revealed plans to acquire four additional Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft by early 2027, bringing the total to ten. This expansion is expected to facilitate more direct flights, reduce layovers, and improve both passenger experience and cargo operations.

The move is also anticipated to generate significant employment opportunities and contribute to national economic goals under the current administration.

Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing Africa’s Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing, welcomed United Nigeria Airlines to the Boeing 737 family, highlighting the aircraft’s reliability and efficiency.

Both airlines confirmed ongoing discussions to further broaden their collaborative efforts.
