The Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport has officially resumed operations, welcoming its first aircraft on Wednesday since its closure in March 2025 for a major upgrade to international standards.
The arrival marks a critical milestone for the facility, signaling its readiness to handle increased traffic. The aircraft, an advance team for the Presidency, landed at 9:14 a.m. to a warm reception from onlookers, setting a positive precedent for the airport’s new phase.
This initial flight serves as a operational test ahead of a high-profile visit by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is scheduled to arrive at the airport on Friday, September 26, 2025, for the coronation of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja. The successful landing demonstrates the enhanced infrastructure’s capability to manage official and international flights safely and efficiently.
The airport’s transformation began in September 2024 when Oyo State Governor ‘Seyi Makinde performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the upgrade. Governor Makinde had stated that the project was designed to connect Oyo State to the global market, boost economic growth, and provide a reliable transportation network for business and leisure travelers.
Prior to the full-scale renovation, the Makinde administration had already undertaken significant improvements, including upgrading the VIP lounge, procuring a new fire truck, and installing a 500,000-litre aviation fuel storage and dispensing facility. The project’s completion is a significant step in positioning the state for greater regional and international connectivity.
