A Delta Air Lines flight from Lagos to Atlanta was diverted to Accra, Ghana, on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, following a fire in one of the aircraft’s galleys. The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) confirmed that the incident on Flight DL055 was contained without injury to passengers or crew.

According to NCAA spokesperson Michael Achinugu, the diversion was necessitated by the fire, and the subsequent unscheduled landing in Accra resulted in the flight crew exceeding their legal duty hours, preventing the continuation of the journey. Delta Air Lines immediately implemented its contingency plans to rebook affected passengers.

The aircraft eventually departed Accra for Atlanta on September 25. The disruption caused a cascade of schedule changes, including the cancellation of the inbound Atlanta-Lagos flight. Affected passengers from that service were rebooked on partner airlines such as Air France, British Airways, KLM, and Lufthansa, with others accommodated on Delta’s next available flight.

The NCAA affirmed that the incident was handled in strict compliance with international safety protocols, underscoring the priority placed on passenger safety. All travelers have been successfully re-accommodated following the operational disruption.
