The House of Representatives has called on the federal and state governments to improve the welfare and working conditions of commercial drivers across the country.

The call followed a motion adopted at plenary on the need to address the multiple challenges faced by drivers, including rising operational costs, poor social protection, and excessive levies imposed by transport unions and regulatory bodies.

Lawmakers noted that commercial drivers play a critical role in Nigeria’s transportation system but continue to operate under harsh economic conditions, with little or no access to health insurance, pension, or welfare schemes.

The House urged relevant ministries and agencies to design a comprehensive framework that would promote fair treatment, regulate operational levies, and provide safety nets for drivers. It also directed its Committees on Transport, Labour and Productivity, and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to liaise with transport unions and other stakeholders to propose practical measures for implementation.

Members further stressed that improved driver welfare would not only enhance their productivity but also contribute to road safety and efficiency in the nation’s transport sector.
