The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a stern warning to motorists and commuters over the dangers of distracted driving and the hazardous practice of fuel-scooping from fallen tankers as the high-traffic “ember months” approach.

The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, speaking through the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, flagged the campaign during the continuation of the 2025 Ember Months Sensitisation Campaign in Abuja on Wednesday.

Mohammed stressed that the initiative, which began with a press conference on October 20, is designed to directly engage drivers and the travelling public about traffic-rule compliance and safe-driving practices.

He highlighted that more than 3,000 people have already died in road crashes from January to September 2025, underscoring the need for heightened vigilance as vehicular movement increases.

On distracted driving, the FRSC warned against activities such as phone calls, eating or drinking, and unsafe overtaking while driving , all of which increase crash risk. Commuters were urged to alert drivers if unsafe behaviour is observed.
