Nigeria has taken a major step in its fight against urban smog and toxic fumes with the inauguration of a first-of-its-kind Vehicular Emissions Testing Centre, established to directly tackle one of the country’s most visible sources of air pollution.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, emphasized that the centre represents a critical step under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) and aligns with the 2025 International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies.
“Today’s commissioning is not just about unveiling a structure, it is about unveiling hope for clean air, healthier lungs, and a safer environment for all Nigerians,” Lawal stated. He highlighted that air pollution is a silent killer, linked to respiratory illnesses, heart disease, stroke, and even neurodevelopmental disorders.
“Since there is no alternative to air, it is imperative we take concrete actions before the situation becomes irredeemable,” the Minister added.
The centre will serve as a hub for scientific testing, research, and enforcement of emissions policies, supporting Nigeria’s climate goals and public health objectives.
Bahijjahtu Abubakar, Director of Pollution Control and Environmental Health, commended project partners including Bhustan Energy and the Nasarawa State Government. She described clean air as a fundamental right and urged vehicle owners to utilize the new facility for emissions testing.
Rotimi Olatunde, representing Bhustan Energy, confirmed that the centre will generate real-time data on vehicular emissions and issue compliance certificates to promote cleaner transport.
The initiative reinforces the government’s commitment to sustainable development and improved environmental governance nationwide.
