The aviation industry is bracing for widespread flight delays and cancellations after Airbus ordered a major recall of around 6,000 A320-family aircraft worldwide roughly half of its global fleet.
The recall follows a serious incident on 30 October involving a flight of JetBlue Airways, whose Airbus A320 reportedly dropped sharply in altitude mid-air, injuring passengers. Investigations traced the cause to a potential glitch in the aircraft’s flight-control system, possibly triggered by intense solar radiation a vulnerability that could corrupt critical control data.
As a precaution, Airbus and regulators such as the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) have issued emergency directives requiring airlines to revert affected A320s to a prior software version. For most aircraft, a simple software update of about two hours is sufficient but some older jets may require hardware intervention, which implies longer grounding times.
The recall is hitting airlines hard carriers such as American Airlines, Lufthansa, IndiGo, easyJet, Avianca and several others have grounded multiple jets, cancelled flights and warned travellers about delays as repair work begins.
